Crop Pollination
Bees perform a task that is vital to the survival of agriculture: pollination. In fact, one third of our global food supply is pollinated by bees. Simply said, bees keep plants and crops alive and without bees, humans wouldn't have very much to eat. Pollination is one step in a multiple process in the development of seed or fruit and it involves three elements which include a flowering plant, pollen and the environment.
Pollen is transferred by various parties such as insects, birds, mammals, wind and water. The most important two being wind and insects, with bees mainly having the most qualifying characteristics i.e. body hairs to which pollen can cling and pollen sacks in which pollen is specially stored and moved from flower to flower.
Commercial crop pollination can be extremely taxing on bees and as such we here at The Beekeeper will always aspire to assist where necessary with as little stress to our colony as possible. Pollination requests will pend final inspection of farms, apiary conditions, pesticide uses etc. Enquiries may be sent to ryan@thebeekeeper.co.za
